What is Veterans Day?
Veterans Day, occurring on November 11 every year, is a federal holiday in the United States that honors those who have served in the United States armed forces. This day was originally called Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I, but was later renamed Veterans Day to commemorate all veterans.
Historical Significance of Veterans Day
Veterans Day, originally celebrated as Armistice Day, was first promulgated by President Woodrow Wilson on November 11, 1919, one year after the end of World War I. Seven years later, in 1926, Congress passed a resolution asking President Calvin Coolidge to issue annual proclamations on November 11, making Armistice Day a legal holiday.

In 1954, Ed Rees, a U.S. Representative from Emporia, Kansas, introduced a bill to Congress establishing the holiday. Eisenhower, then president and also from Kansas, signed the bill into law on May 26, 1954, eight and a half years after Raymond Weeks celebrated the first Veterans Day.
The National Veterans Award was also established in 1954, first received by Congressman Rees for his support of making Veterans Day a federal holiday. Although the holiday is currently celebrated and was originally celebrated on November 11, the date was moved to the fourth Monday of October 1971 due to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. Finally, on September 20, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed a law returning Veterans Day to its original date of November 11, beginning in, state or local.
